Gila County sits in the mountainous eastern portion of Arizona, with county government operations split between the county seat of Globe in the south and the satellite office in Payson to the north. The county’s court system includes the Gila County Superior Court, two regional Justice Courts, and several Municipal Courts, each producing records related to criminal prosecutions, civil disputes, family law matters, and probate proceedings. The Clerk of the Superior Court serves as the primary custodian for most of these filings, while individual Justice Courts and municipal courts maintain their own case files.

Residents and members of the public looking for court case information in Arizona can access records through several channels, including clerk offices, public-access terminals at courthouses, and online search tools. The Arizona Judicial Branch operates a Public Access Case Lookup database that allows anyone to search for case information across Arizona’s Superior Courts, and ArizonaCourts.us may help users locate publicly available court case data statewide. The state also offers the eAccess portal, which provides 24/7 access to Superior Court documents in civil and criminal cases filed on or after July 1, 2010.

Are Court Records Public in Gila County?

Arizona has strong public records laws. Under Arizona Revised Statutes Title 39, public records held by government agencies — including court records — are open to inspection by any person during regular business hours. Arizona Supreme Court Rule 123 further provides that all case records are open to the public except as closed by law, court rule, or court order.

However, several categories of Gila County court records carry restrictions:

  • Sealed records — Cases sealed by court order are not accessible to the public. A court must state its reason for sealing any record.
  • Juvenile records — Proceedings involving minors are generally closed and confidential under Arizona law.
  • Adoption records — All adoption-related filings are sealed upon finalization.
  • Mental health and medical records — Court records involving mental health evaluations and medical information are protected.
  • Records implicating privacy interests — A court or custodian may restrict access if disclosure would cause private or public harm.
  • Victim information — Records identifying victims of certain crimes may be restricted.

On the eAccess portal, sealed records and documents closed by law, court rule, or court order are automatically excluded from search results. Certain sensitive or confidential information contained within otherwise public documents may also be redacted before release.

Vital records in Arizona — including birth and death certificates — are treated separately from court records. Arizona is a “closed record” state for vital records, meaning birth and death certificates are not public documents. Access is restricted to eligible individuals under Arizona Administrative Codes R9-19-210, R9-19-211, R9-19-314, and R9-19-315.
